It is fitting that the Peace Bridge from Buffalo to Canada crosses at Fort Erie. Here, where the town originated in 1764, it was established as a British military outpost, and entrusted to keep the peace along the Niagara River. Clearly, Fort Erie's adjacency to the United States makes it one of the primal Canadian gateways welcoming millions of visitors who cross the bridge each year from New York State.
From Canada Day, July 1st to Independence Day, July 4th, the Fort Erie Friendship Festival celebrates the USA/Canada partnership with concerts, fireworks, and colourful festivities on both sides of the border. The Loch Sloy Highland Games offer a wonderful insight to the Scottish culture while the surrounding villages of Crystal Beach, Ridgeway, and the Bridgewater Station District offer their own distinctive charm to this area. The Mildred Mahoney Doll House Gallery, the Native Indian Pow-Wow and an International Air Show are notable attractors which enhance the community's profile.
