The May Long Weekend In Niagara
The May long weekend, or May two-four weekend as it is popularly known in Canada, is most importantly known as the Victoria Day Long Weekend. This holiday weekend is the official kick-off to the Canadian summer and there is no shortage of events throughout Niagara to ensure anyone can have a great time.
The Virgil Stampede is a cornerstone of the Victoria Day weekend celebrations in Niagara and features a plethora of all ages and family oriented events. The Stampede begins on Saturday, May 17 this year and kicks off with tournaments, pig races and live music. The Stampede is closed on Sunday, but resumes the festivities on Monday, May 19. The weekend event culminates in the famous firework display as a finale on Monday night at 9:30 p.m.
For the older crowd looking for some food and drink the May 24 Weekend is the starter pistol for Port Dalhousie's bar district. Between walks on the beach or pier to dinner, dancing and live music; this historic area has so much to see and do anyone looking for a little fun will be hard pressed not to have a good time.
The 39th Annual Niagara Folk Arts Festival - May 11-27, 2007, one of Canada's oldest heritage festivals. The Ambassador's Ball kicks off events on May 11th. Centre to the official opening ceremonies at the front steps of City Hall on May 12th. All events culminate with the Folk Arts in the Park May 25th to the 27th. Historic Montebello Park is transformed into a world bazaar showcasing cuisine, music, and dance from around the world.
The 22nd Pelham Art Festival is the premiere spring art exhibition in Southern Ontario. Over 80 artists from Ontario, Quebec and the United States have been invited to present their new original art works. The Festival's preview night and Gala opening is Friday, May 9th from 7 to10 p.m. and features live music. The Art Festival continues Saturday and Sunday, May 10th and 11th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with live entertainment.
The 4th Annual NOTL B&B Spring House Tour on May 10, 2008 will allow visitors to Niagara to see some of the area's storied bed and breakfasts and historic properties.
The RCMP Musical Ride will be in Beamsville on Wednesday, May 21st Representing a colourful tradition and ceremony through the horse and the scarlet uniform.
There are so many events throughout Niagara on the Victoria Day Long Weekend, and all of May, be sure to take the time to travel throughout our beautiful countryside and search out the local carnivals, fairs and of course don’t forget the shops.

Visit www.welland.ca/Leisure/events.asp for a complete list, but our favourite is IlluminAqua – taking place along Welland Recreational Waterway, Merritt Park on May 30, June 27, July 24-27, August 22, 2008. The event is a blend of art, culture, and the elements of fire and water. Pods of fire float in a laid-out design along the Recreational Waterway, while strains of music fill the air.
