Greenbelt
Niagara is home to so many amazing features it is hard to put your finger on just one place to visit. So, why bother? Don't just visit one, visit them all. Niagara's Greenbelt features lush farmlands, scenic drives, all levels of hiking and walking trails, local markets, cozy inns and, of course, wineries aplenty. The myriad of tourism oriented businesses in the Niagara Region and more specifically the Niagara Greenbelt almost boggles the mind. Exploring Niagara is the adventure of a lifetime and just a short trip from almost anywhere in Ontario and the North Eastern United States.
The Greenbelt's 1.8 million acres (720,000 hectares) - including about 40,000 hectares of the Niagara Peninsula Tender Fruit and Grape Area, which would have been consumed by urban development if previous development patterns had continued - wraps around the Golden Horseshoe and is vital to the quality of life of Ontarians. It encompasses the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine, Rouge Park, some 7,000 farms, and hundreds of rural towns and villages. The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation began its work in June 2005 as an independent, charitable foundation with a mandate to fund organizations in support of farming, the environment and rural communities located in Ontario's Greenbelt.
