Historic Niagara

Journey back in time to what would become the side-by-side communities of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Queenston. Both towns were major battlefields during the War of 1812 when Canada was invaded by the United States.

Niagara-on-the-Lake was the first capital of Upper Canada (Ontario), and Queenston Heights was the location of one of the key skirmishes of the War of 1812. Both towns were shelled, attacked, captured, occupied and later put to the torch by an American army as it retreated from a combined British, Canadian and native force. Rising from the ashes at the end of the war, they were rebuilt and have been preserved in their 18th and 19th century splendour.

Today Niagara-on-the-Lake and Queenston remain steeped in history. Some of the historic landmarks will be featured on this tour.

We begin the tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake at Fort George*. Few Niagara-on-the-Lake landmarks remind us of it's military heritage as much as Fort George. You can watch soldiers in period uniforms perform drills and musical programs on the parade square or learn 19th century cooking techniques.

From Fort George head south on the Niagara Parkway into the town of Queenston. At the corner of Partition and Queenston Streets, you will find Laura Secord's Homestead*. Laura Secord was a heroine who walked her way into history. Learn about her heroism among the many artifacts on display in the Laura Secord Homestead.

Your historic discovery continues by visiting the Mackenzie Heritage Printery Museum*, located in the restored home of "firebrand editor" William Lyon Mackenzie. Mackenzie published and produced the newspaper, the Colonial Advocate. Visit the press room, printshop and second floor gallery. To reach the Museum, continue south on Queenston Street.

As you travel the Niagara Parkway south, you will come across historic Queenston Heights Park. You can't miss this parkland, just look for Brock's Monument*, a 185-foot statue in honour of Sir Isaac Brock, a British General killed during the Battle of Queenston Heights in the War of 1812.
